Green your brewery with EKOenergy!
YOUNG EUROPEANS HELPING THE ENVIRONMENT
YOUNG EUROPEAN TEAM PROMOTES CLEAN ENERGY IN BREWERIES
Run by a team of eight Erasmus students and European Voluntary Service participants from France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Russia and Spain, the ‘Green your brewery with EKOenergy!’ campaign promotes renewable energy in the brewing industry by encouraging breweries to adopt the EKOenergy ecolabel. When breweries sign up to the label, their energy suppliers give money to a climate fund that invests in renewable energy and energy access projects in developing countries.
How do they do it
The team of young people has chosen to start with the brewing industry due to its popularity and the high amount of energy it uses. Working with EKOenergy-certified energy suppliers, the team contacts breweries directly or through the suppliers to promote the label. This is backed up by production of easy-to-understand communication materials in eight languages, as well as social media activity, articles and interviews with breweries that have made the switch. Those that sign up can use the EKOenergy ecolabel on their packaging, providing them with an extra marketing tool.
More breweries and new sectors
The project began in Finland and is now being replicated elsewhere. Eight breweries – in Finland, Italy and Spain – have already got involved, one of which, Italy’s Lesster brewery, has cut its CO2 emissions by 10 tonnes. The team is working to attract more breweries and also plans to expand to other industries, with projects underway in the chocolate and tourism sectors.
